President’s message

Greetings to our members!

We had a very productive and successful season. Thankfully we had very few capital expenses so we only ran a slight deficit. Our utilities and payroll are challenging, but we are making it work for now.

The board is tired, and we need more members to step up to replace those of us who have been serving this pool for a very long time. Please consider joining the board! We need you to keep this pool going. We need a succession plan, please consider stepping up.

There are a few deferred maintenance considerations for next year such as concrete work and diving boards, and perhaps new pool vacuums. These will be one way we use the proceeds we get from your memberships.

Thank you all for a great season and enjoy your winter. We will be hard at work preparing for next season.

House Chair message

From an operations standpoint, we had a relatively good year at the pool. There were no major repairs necessary, and all the essential equipment remains in good working order. We did work through the typical stream of minor repairs that is expected with an ageing pool and ageing equipment. There are several areas that we continue to monitor and expect to need some major repairs in the coming years.

We started the year with some plaster repair within the pool and painted over a few of the heavy traffic areas. Pool tile and deck repair are an ongoing issue. We are beginning to look into longer term options to address cracking and flaking concrete around the deck. The diving boards are beginning to show their age, and we will plan to complete some minor cosmetic repairs prior to next year. We refreshed many areas of the building with a new coat of paint and will continue this effort next year. The tubing on the chemical system and peristaltic pumps was replaced and that system performed reliably all summer.

Maintaining the pool in good working condition continues to be a team effort and any capable hands are always appreciated.

Please feel free to reach out if you are interested in lending a hand as there is always something to be done. Thanks for a great year and I look forward to another great season next year.

Treasurer’s Report (October 2023)

The 2023 fiscal year ended 30 September. Income was nearly what was predicted ($153,558.19) while total expenses were higher than expected. Payroll was significantly higher this year ($92,834.36) due in part to the newest change in minimum wage. Utilities ($22,194.04) saw a large increase as well. On a positive note, the snack bar was popular again and several members enjoyed booking parties.

News for 2024: Expenses are expected to be roughly the same for 2024. The yearly assessment will be $550 ($475 base assessment + $75 work deposit) if paid by 30 April. Beginning 1 May, the assessment will be $575 ($500 base assessment + $75 work deposit). We appreciate everyone who helps to open and close the pool–it keeps costs down a bit because we do not have to hire extra outside help. Your work deposit can be refunded by volunteering 3-4 hours (or more, if you can!). You can participate in a work party, assist with various tasks that need to be done through the season (gardening, snack bar, etc.) or tackle projects around the pool that need to be completed. This is a community resource and it will take all of us members pulling together to keep it going!

Creative ideas are appreciated and welcome; feel free to e-mail me directly (treasurer@barrancapool.com) or the entire board (board@barrancapool.com). We are all volunteers and appreciate your patience if a response is requested. :)

Employment Chair message

Once again, BMPA was SO lucky to have such awesome staff this last pool season! They worked hard, kept up on duties and made great connections with the patrons and each other. Recruitment for Summer 2024 employees will begin December of 2023. Job applications will be posted on our website. Interviews will be conducted in February.

Positions available are Manager, Assistant Manager, Head Guard, Life Guard and basketroom. Positions awarded will be determined by the interview, qualifications and if they have been previously employed by BMPA. All applicants must be 14 years old BEFORE the pool opens at the end of May. Those individuals seeking guard positions (age 15 and over) must complete and pass the Red Cross lifeguard training course by the time the pool opens.

The employment application will be posted on our website. Completed applications can be emailed
to employment@barrancapool.com

See you next season!

Membership Chair message

Thanks to all our members for continued support. Our membership model might be changing a bit as we
consider re-writing our by-laws. Nationwide, there has been a decrease in private pool membership and in order to keep the pool operating, we might need to change the structure a bit.

This year, we were at 257 memberships sold. Revenue from memberships is what generates our ability to pay our guards, the majority of our expenditures. Less memberships sold than predicted, and staffing costs were higher than expected, hence the deficit in the overall budget.

We continue to need to invite others to join as members. We have considered offering a referral bonus.

Also, we plan to raise assessments in the 2024 summer season. This will help us close the gap we saw in the overall budget this year.
